Test Name

Androstenedione (A4)

Test Description

Androstenedione (A4) is a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, ovaries, and testicles. It acts as a precursor in the synthesis of estrone and testosterone. This hormone is significantly responsible for the onset of sexual differentiation in males and the development of secondary male characteristics.  An increased level of androstenedione may indicate an adrenal tumor or cancer, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). This elevation is usually due to the overproduction of hormones by the adrenal, ovarian or testicular glands.
