Test Description
Acid phosphatase is an enzyme made in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. This enzyme is utilized during digestion to remove phosphate from other molecules. High levels of acid phosphatase may indicate infection, metastatis of prostate cancer beyond the capsule, particularly to the bone. Prostatic acid phosphatase is produced by the prostate gland and released into the seminal fluid. It is a major marker for prostate cancer.
