Test Description
The hormone 17 –hydroxyprogesterone is produced by the sex glands and adrenal glands. 17-OH is made by the adrenal glands as a part of producing Cortisol which is essential in maintaining blood pressure, blood sugar, and also few functions of the immune system. 17-OH blood test can be used for screening of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). This test is routinely performed as a part of the newborn screening program. High levels of 17-OH are usually inferred as a severe form of CAH whereas lower levels of 17-OH indicate that the treatment is working.
